Louise O’Dwyer has worked at PetMedics, the UKs largest emergency clinic for the past 12 years and is currently Clinical Director. Louise holds both the Medical and Surgical Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing as well as being a board certified veterinary technician specialist in Emergency and Critical Care. In 2012 Louise gained her MBA and is currently a part time PhD student at Manchester Metropolitan University looking at resistant bacteria in veterinary practice and their relevance in biofilms.
Louise contributes regularly to veterinary nursing articles, sitting on the editorial board of the Veterinary Nurse journal. Louise is the author of ‘Wound Management for the Veterinary Nurse and Technician’ and the forthcoming ‘Practical Techniques in Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Nursing’.
Louise lectures regularly in the UK and internationally on a range of topics.

Surgery of the Urinary System: When, how and why to use cystotomy tubes.
In this webinar we will be discussing how to manage cases that require urinary diversion. This may be a blocked cat, urethral trauma, neurological disease, or palliative care for trigonal neoplasia. Understanding how to best manage these patients in the short and long term is essential to the overall success of treatment. Although urethral catheterisation is relatively simple, it can be challenging in some cases and it never allows us to assess the patient’s ability to urinate when it is still in place. In contrast, a cystotomy tube is predictable to place and allows long term management, including being able to assess voluntary urination without removal. We will discuss when, how and why to use cystotomy tubes so that this technique can be applied in a wide range of scenarios in general practice.
