Description

Most endocrinopathies are chronic diseases but can present acutely to the emergency practice.  Derangements in fluid balance, electrolytes, acid/base disturbances, and energy homeostasis secondary to endocrinopathies can range from the mild to the severely life-threatening.  In this webinar we will talk about a few of the more common endocrine diseases and their emergency presentations: Hyperadrenocorticism, hypoadrenocorticism, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes mellitus.  For each condition we will consider the most important aspects of the emergency period and discuss diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to manage these complex cases.  Questions for discussion include: When should a diabetic with ketosis be managed as an outpatient? What drugs should we give a suspect Addisonian crisis? How can we recognise hypertension and when should we manage it?  How should I dose insulin/how much insulin can I give?  What insulin formulation can I use in the emergency setting?  What should I do if my practice doesn’t have access to an in-house blood-gas analyser?  Should I refer or manage the patient in-house?
