Behavioural Euthanasia - Indications and Support

Behavioural Euthanasia - Indications and Support
Behavioural Euthanasia - Indications and Support

Many animals with problem behaviour can be helped with a Veterinary Behaviour Diagnosis and Treatment. But some do not, despite good treatment plans that are well implemented. Some owners find that they are unable or unwilling to support their pet through a treatment plan for the rest of its life. There can be significant risks to the owners, other people, other pets in the household and other animals in the community. All these factors may result in a client requesting euthanasia for their (often young and physically healthy) pet.
This presentation will discuss euthanasia for veterinary psychiatry patients. When it is indicated and how it can be approached with owners. Understanding the distress unremitting or untreated mental health can cause can help provide a rational approach for this situation.
The presentation will also discuss how to make the end-of-life process safe and calm for pets with anxiety disorders as well as how to make it safe for veterinary staff.
