Postoperative recovery for all surgical patients carries an inevitable element of risk, including the possibility of acute clinical complications or deterioration. This lecture will provide a 'deep dive' into the essential skills and clinical interventions that should be implemented during the postoperative period, aiming to boost your confidence and knowledge for critical surgical patient recovery.
The learning outcomes for this lecture include:
- Promoting patient safety standards in the OR in preparation for recovery
- The importance of vascular access and how to place and maintain varying types of vascular lines
- The surgical nurse's role in patient recovery, beyond 'kennel-side' nursing
- Implementing evidence-based clinical practice and skills for the nursing support of critical surgical patients

Flick is a Registered Veterinary Nurse and holds the RCVS Advanced Diploma in Small Animal Nursing. She is currently studying for an MSc degree in advanced veterinary nursing with an AVN specialism in surgery and analgesia. Flick has worked as an advanced referral nurse in surgical and anaesthesia disciplines for various referral hospitals and now works primarily in academia.
Flick is the Founder of the social media page 'Veterinary Surgical Nursing' and has further joined the team at 'Veterinary Specialist Advice' as a clinical educator in surgery and perioperative nursing. Flick's clinical interests include clinical anatomy, nursing of multi-trauma surgical patients, thoracic surgery, and endosurgery. She is an international CPD speaker and really enjoys writing academic content for nursing journal articles.
