If this sounds like you, we have good news: this e-learning course provides a comprehensive guide to managing life-threatening cardiorespiratory emergencies in veterinary medicine. Designed for rapid clinical decision making, the program covers the stabilization of critically ill pets through five core modules - ranging from the general approach to patients in shock, thromboembolic diseases, to bleeding disorders and road traffic accidents. The three ECC experts will prepare you to handle these critical patients with confidence, rather than fear!

Module 3: Cardiorespiratory Crisis – Rapid Stabilization
Module 4: RTA- Rapid Damage Assessment
Module 5: Stop the Crash - Shock Management 
 
Each module consists of a webinar, lecture documents and homework exercises which are corrected by the team.

Soren Boysen

DVM, Professor, DACVECC

Professor Soren Boysen obtained his DVM from the University of Saskatchewan (Canada), completed a small animal internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College (Canada), and a residency at Tufts University (United States), becoming a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2003. He is the former Chief of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Montreal, and currently a Full Professor of veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Calgary. Extensively published, and a recipient of numerous teaching and research excellence awards, he has become an internationally recognized speaker. Although he loves all things ECC, he is considered a pioneer of veterinary point of care ultrasound (VPOCUS), having developed the small animal Focused Assessment of Sonography for Trauma (FAST) exam with his colleagues at Tufts. With many great colleagues from around the world he continues to actively research and develop veterinary point of care ultrasound (VPOCUS) training techniques, education programs, and workshops for non-specialist practitioners. Along with point of care ultrasound, his research interests include hemorrhage, coagulation, and perfusion.

Corrin Boyd

DVM, BSc BVMS(Hons), GradDipEd, MVetClinStud, MANZCVS, DACVECC

Dr Boyd is a criticalist employed as Senior Lecturer in Emergency and Critical Care at The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University. He is also a PhD candidate at Murdoch University, researching the adverse effects of fluid therapy products, with a focus on synthetic colloids. He graduated from Murdoch University in 2009. He remained at Murdoch working as a staff veterinarian in the Emergency and Critical Care service, before completing an internship (2013) and residency (2014-2017) in Emergency and Critical Care. He achieved ACVECC diplomate status in 2017. He also was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Education and Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies during this training. His main research interests include shock and fluid resuscitation, especially synthetic colloids, and their adverse effects on coagulation and kidney function. Other interests include congenital coagulopathies, kidney injury biomarkers, extracorporeal therapies, anaphylaxis, enteropathogens, patient anxiety and sleep patterns in the ICU, use of technology in ECC and ethics in ECC.

Marisa Lourenco

DVM, MRCVS, DACVECC

Graduated from the University of Évora in 2015, worked in several clinics and hospitals from North to South of Portugal, before moving to the United Kingdom, where she worked as a first opinion emergency doctor near London. In 2018 she began her specialty training with a rotating internship at the University of Edinburgh, and in 2019 Marisa emigrated to the USA, where she completed an Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) specialty internship at the University of Georgia, followed by a 3-year residency in the same field at Tufts University in Massachusetts. In 2023 she returned to England to be part of the founding team of the ECC service at a new referral hospital, and in 2024 she became a diplomate of the American College of Emergency and Critical Care. She is currently one of the consultants in the Critical Care department at The Ralph referral hospital.
Her main areas of interest are respiratory diseases (with a special focus on mechanical ventilation), as well as the management of trauma and post-operative patients in the ICU.
She is passionate about contributing to educational opportunities for both veterinary students and professionals, inspiring teams to thrive in the practice of small animal emergency medicine and critical care.
