Practical application of antimicrobial stewardship in wound care

Antimicrobial resistance is a one health issue that affects animal, human and environmental health. This growing issues is estimated that 40 million lives could be at risk between 2025 and 2050 if drastic action is not taken. As veterinary professionals nurses play a pivotal role in preventing wound infections and aiding in the wound healing process. The animal with a wound should undergo a full holistic wound assessment that considers the animals ability to heal, wound dressing selection and the wound bed preparation required. All of these factors can have an effect on how a wound progresses and the risk of adverse events occurring, such as wound infections that lead to an increase prescribing of systemic antibiotics. This webinar aims to highlight the nurses roles in preventing wound infections and how to best implement guidelines that promote antimicrobial stewardship.

Amanda joined the register in 2012 and has worked in a variety of clinical settings, she began her journey with wound care in 2015 completing the BVNA wound course. She since left clinical practice where she spent 2 years teaching student vet nurses before moving to Essity as the inside Sales Specialist in Advanced Wound Care. She has a passion for evidence based veterinary nursing and is completing a degree in health science to advance her knowledge in infectious disease, microbiology, and antimicrobial resistance.
