Veterinary nurses can contribute enormously to ear care in their clinic. This presentation will equip the veterinary nurse with the appropriate knowledge to feel confident in assisting the veterinarian in investigation and management of otitis. It will cover the structure of the external ear canal and middle ear which are essential before embarking on any investigation or therapy of otitis. It will also discuss the types of discharge that are created in the ear canal through the inflammatory process and how to assess the most appropriate way to clean the ear and which actives within ear cleaners are best utilised to achieve good cleaning. 

It will also cover how to take samples from the ear including samples for cytology and include a basic guide to interpretation.

This program has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. 

The accreditation of CE Points is approved under the condition of a positive completion of the test in the specified period and is valid until 18 February 2027.

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated (1) AVNAT CPD point to this continuing education activity.

Dr Sue Paterson is a RCVS and European Board-Certified Veterinary Dermatologist. She is an elected Fellow of the RCVS for her contributions to clinical practice in the field of Veterinary Dermatology. 

Sue has written 7 text books (including 3 on ear disease) and more than 90 refereed publications in English, European and American journals. She has lectured extensively and has been an invited speaker at international meetings in more than 40 countries. 

She is an elected member of RCVS Council, was President of the RCVS 2023 - 24. Sue is a past president of the BSAVA and of ESVD. She is the current President of the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology. Sue is a Trustee of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and in her spare time enjoys long walks with her dogs across the Cumbrian fells where she lives.
