Courtney Scales

Courtney is originally from New Zealand, where she trained and qualified. She began her career in veterinary nursing in 2007 and worked in multiple clinics in New Zealand before moving to Australia, before relocating to the UK and working in the anaesthesia department of a university hospital and referral hospitals.
Courtney started Veterinary Anursethesia in 2016 while completing her Nurses Certificate in Anaesthesia with Improve International, then studied towards her postgraduate certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia through Edinburgh University, which was awarded with distinction.
She has published several journal articles and textbook chapters and is currently authoring two veterinary textbooks due to be published in 2026 (with Wiley and CABI), and speaks at CPD events and national congresses all over the world. In 2025, Courtney started here Post-Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Education, Mentorship and Leadership with the University of Central Lancaster.

Craig graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2011. He spent several years in a busy general practice in the Northeast of England before returning for a residency in Internal Medicine.
Craig has stayed on and is one of the Co-Heads of the Emergency & Critical Care Department. His main research interests are acute medicine and immune-mediated diseases.

Craig spends most of his time in the Emergency & Critical Care department, where he is co-head. His main interests are immune-mediated conditions, and IMPA in particular.

Cristina graduated in 2011 from the University of Melbourne and commenced an internship at Ballarat Veterinary Practice. Following this she worked as a medicine registrar at the Veterinary Clinical Centre, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. She subsequently undertook an equine medicine residency at the U-Vet Equine Centre, Werribee. During her residency she was awarded Memberships in Equine Medicine and completed her Masters project investigating the inflammatory pathways involved in placental detachment in the mare. Since completing her residency Cristina has worked in both private and referral practice in the UK and Australia, and became a Fellow of the ANZCVS in June 2021. Her special interest is equine neonatology, as well as neonate & adult critical care, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disease and placental abnormalities.

Dr. Dana Madey-Rindermann, geboren 1984, studierte 2004 bis 2010 Veterinärmedizin in Berlin. Nach 1,5 jähriger Tätigkeit in einer Gemischtpraxis mit Nutztierschwerpunkt promovierte sie von 2011 bis 2014 am Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut Celle in Kooperation mit der Tierärztlichen Hochschule Hannover zum Thema: „Evaluation of a software–based intervention tool for the reduction of tail biting in German fattening pigs“. 2014 gewann ihre Dissertation den ersten Forschungspreis der BPT-Fachgruppe Schwein.
Von 2014 bis heute ist sie angestellt als Tierärztin in der Veterinärgesellschaft im Bundes Hybrid Zucht Programm (BHZP), wobei 50% der Tätigkeit Bestandsbetreuung der Basiszuchtbetriebe und Vermehrungsbetriebe darstellt und 50% Beratung zum Thema Schwanz- und Ohrbeißen (BHZP- und Fremdbetriebe) beinhalten. 2015 und 2016 führte sie u.a. die Starterseminare für die „Ringelschwanzprämie Niedersachsen“ durch. Dr. Madey-Rindermann ist außerdem Sprecherin der Task Force des Expertennetzwerks „Ringelschwanz“.

Dan received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine qualification from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1998. He then completed a small animal internship at Animal Medical Center in New York City. This was followed by a dual residency in Emergency and Critical Care and Clinical Nutrition at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, after which he served as a Research Assistant Professor for two years. Dan was board certified by the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2004, and by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in 2005. He joined the faculty at the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2005 and is now Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Nutrition. Since 2010, Dan has also been the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

Following graduation in 1995 from Cambridge, Dan worked in mixed practice for 5 years, where he gained the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia. In 2000, he moved to Petmedics, a large hospital-based emergency clinic in Manchester, where he remained for 8 years. In 2008 Dan embarked upon a residency at the RVC, obtaining his American Diploma in Emergency & Critical Care in 2011. Since then he has been in charge of the ICU at Bristol Vet School before another period at Petmedics. Dan also holds the European Diploma in Emergency & Critical Care and is a RCVS-recognised specialist.
Dan joined Vets Now Referrals at Glasgow in January 2015 and contributes to the 24 hour Emergency & Critical Care referral service available there.
Dan is interested in all aspects of emergency and intensive care, but particularly in septic patients, animals needing ventilatory support and critically ill cats.

Daniela Casoni is born in Bologna (Italy) where she achieved graduation in Veterinary Medicine with full notes cum laude and honours in 2001. In 2002 she commenced her PhD in “Critical Care and emergency medicine” and she defended her final thesis (Trauma scores: lessons learnt from Human Medicine and their future in Veterinary Medicine) in May 2005. As a research fellow (2005-2009) and clinical instructor, her interests were mainly focused on trauma care, non-invasive monitoring of peripheral perfusion and anaesthesia and analgesia of emergency patients. In 2010 she visited the University of Pennsylvania (USA) for 6 months and she worked mainly at the anaesthesia division of the Large Animal Hospital (New Bolton Center) and at the Small Animal ICU. In 2011 she started her Residency Program in Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the Anaesthesia and Analgesia Division, Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, University of Berne (Switzerland) where she completed it in 2014. In 2014 she worked as staff clinician at the same division. Since 2017 she is ECVAA recognized specialist. Pain, nociception and clinical pharmacology have been the main area of her interest during these years. From January 2011 to March 2016, she had also been employed at the Emergency Service of Equine Clinic (ISME), University of Berne. At the same University, in January 2015 she started an 18 months’ post-doctoral research project on chronic pain after disbudding in calves. Between July 2016 and December 2017, she has been employed as clinical lecturer of anesthesia and analgesia at the Department of Equine and Small Animal medicine of the University of Helsinki. She has returned to University of Berne in January 2018, and she is currently leading the Experimental Surgery Facility (ESF) of the Faculty of Medicine. She is author and coauthor of more than 40 peer reviewed publications and presents routinely at national and international congresses.

Dani graduated from Murdoch University in 2007 with honors. She worked in busy small animal general practices both in Sydney, Australia and Portland, Oregon before completing a dermatology internship in Perth, Western Australia and then moving to the University of California, Davis to join the dermatology service at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital as a resident. Dani finished her residency in 2013 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology the same year. Upon completion of her residency, Dani continued to work as a clinical dermatologist at UC Davis, providing instruction to undergraduate students and consulting on referral cases. Dani is the Director of the Veterinary Dermatology Clinic and consults along the East Coast of Australia, Dani is also the Chief Veterinary Officer at PetSure.

Dr Darren Merrett graduated from The University of Melbourne in 1984 and completed internship/residency programs at the University of Melbourne (where he obtained a Master of Veterinary Studies) and then Bristol University. Whilst at Bristol University Darren obtained his certificate in Small Animal Cardiology from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He obtained Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Canine Medicine) in 1994 and founded a private referral practice at that time. Over the following years the medical referral practice has grown and now utilises the skills of four specialists, and one resident.
