Separation Anxiety – what’s new in the treatment approach of this common problem

This presentation reframes “Separation Anxiety” as part of a broader category—Separation Related Behaviours (SRBs)—which may arise from a range of emotional states, including panic, fear, frustration, desire, or play. Dr. Katrin Jahn emphasises that understanding the underlying emotional driver is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Common signs such as vocalisation, destruction, and elimination must be assessed in context, using a thorough behavioural history that includes factors like frequency, latency, intensity, and recovery time. Differential diagnoses—such as pain, medical conditions, or under-stimulation—must also be carefully ruled out.
