Clinical approach of patients with sodium disturbances - for Nurses

Goals of the lecture will be able to appropriately treat hyponatremia and hypernatremia, with both acute and chronic changes. We will review the sodium and water balance physiology, discussing triggers and effectors for the anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). We will discuss practical dysnatremia management and discuss consequences and side effects of those treatments by focusing of the clinical management of 4 cases: acute hyponatremia, chronic hyponatremia, acute hypernatremia and chronic hyponatremia.

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated (1) AVNAT CPD point to this continuing education activity.

Julien Guillaumin

Julien Guillaumin, Dip ACVECC, Dip ECVECC Associate Professor - Clinical Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care

Dr Guillaumin graduated from the French Veterinary School of Nantes in 2001. After graduation and a Small Animal Internship (Surgical emphasis) in the French Veterinary School of Alfort, he practiced in France in both private practice settings (Argenteuil, Versailles) and academia (SIAMU in the French Veterinary School of Lyon, currently Vet Agro Sup). He completed his ECC residency training at the University of California in Davis, and has been a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care since 2009. He is also a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He spent 10 years as a faculty member at The Ohio State University and is now a faculty at Colorado State University.
