Small Animal Transfusion Medicine – what to give, when to give it and what to do when it goes wrong

With the increasing expansion of small animal emergency and critical care and the increasing development of pet blood bank programs, small animal transfusion medicine is becoming increasingly common. In this webinar we will briefly review the blood products available for use in cats and dogs, how they are made and what they contain. Common indications for blood product transfusion will be discussed. The webinar will then go on to focus on best techniques for administration of blood products and monitoring of transfusions. Different types of transfusion reaction that may be encountered in small animals will be discussed, including a systematic approach to the investigation and appropriate response to any suspected transfusion reactions that are likely to be encountered.
